What could be an alternative? Assume that the subject (together with its theta-role) may be incorporated into the passive morphology in the sense of Jaeggli (1986), Baker, Johnson and Roberts (1989), and Weerman (1989). The formal features of this implicit argument can be raised covertly and can be checked against the [V-I]-complex of the passive auxiliary. Since raising amounts to adjunction to the [V-I]-complex, insertion of a phrasally manifested expletive may be suspended altogether. This would be in agreement with Fanselow's suggestion that in German the EPP does not hold without exception. What explains the grarnrnaticality difference between (5a) and (5b) below, remains an open question though:
